PINK FLOYD – Cashing In 43 Years Ago…

28 April 2016

Legendary and experimental sonic wizards PINK FLOYD hit the top spot of the US albums chart – 43 years ago today – with their timeless masterpiece DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
and stayed there for 741 discontinuous weeks. Must be a sort of Olympic marathon record,
no doubt about that. MONEY the opening track of side two of the longplayer was clearly written (by Roger Waters) to be a single (No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100). It sounded like nothing else on the LP. Weirdly catchy with its unusual 7/4–4/4 time signature, noises of a
cash register & money coins, a marvelous saxophone segment and a short, tremendous
guitar solo. Final score: a timeless, money-making hit. Cha ching!…

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you’re okay
Money, it’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I’ll buy me a football team

Money, get back
I’m all right Jack keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it’s a hit
Don’t give me that do goody good bullshit
I’m in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money, it’s a crime
Share it fairly but don’t take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a raise it’s no surprise
That they’re giving none away
Away, away, way
(Away, away, away, away)
