Patti Smith : ‘Redondo Beach’ …

“I never felt oppressed because of my gender. When I’m writing a poem or drawing, I’m not a female… I’m an artist ”Patti Smith

For me Patti Smith always was a genuine passioned, singing rock & roll poet. As so many I was floored by her 1975 debut album ‘Horses’ (produced by John Cale). I always had (and still have) the impression that the song ‘Redondo Beach’ on that debut record was/is a bit overlooked. ‘Gloria’, ‘Land’ and ‘Elegie’ got always more attention in reviews. Me, I was hooked from the first time I heard it. When I discovered it was about the suicide of a lesbian girl after falling out with her lover… it felt weird… a devastating suicide song with an uplifting melody and that ‘hopefull’ reggae feel. This live rendition at this year’s Montreux Festival (Switserland) is just wonderfull. Longtime friend Tom Verlaine is on guitar…

Late afternoon, dreaming hotel
We just had the quarrel that sent you away
I was looking for you, but you were gone, gone?

Called you on the phone, another dimension
You never returned, oh you know what I mean
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone?

Down by the ocean, it was so dismal
Women all standing with shock on their faces
Sad description, oh I was looking for you

Everyone was singing, girl was washed up
On Redondo beach and everyone was so sad
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone?

Pretty little girl, everyone cried
She was the victim of sweet suicide
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone?

Down by the ocean it was so dismal
Women all standing with shock on their faces
Sad description, oh I was looking for you

Desk clerk told me girl was washed up
Was small, an angel with apple blonde hair, now
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone?

Picked up my key, didn’t reply
Went to my room, started to cry
You were small, an angel, are you gone, gone?

Down by the ocean it was so dismal
I was just standing with shock on my face
The Hearse pulled away and the girl that had died, it was you

You’ll never return into my arms ’cause you were gone, gone
Never return into my arms ’cause you were gone, gone
Gone, gone
Gone, gone
Goodbye
