My experience: just coming out of rehab it seemed like the man became a newborn composer – trust me (I’m a huge Cave fan) ‘The Good Son’ is one of his finest works of versatile beauty and grand songwriting – majestic songs, mighty arrangements, his dramatic piano play and of course, his highly imposing voice.
Highlights: several, but one stands out… ‘The Ship Song’ – very special to my wife and me as it was our wedding song – thanks, Nick ! Love you, Marianne !
Nick Cave on ‘The Ship Song’: “At that time, I was really trying to write a bunch of classic love songs. Because I loved those sorts of songs. I’ve always been impressed by people who can write songs that catch people’s hearts. I wrote that line ‘Come sail your ships round me’ and some time later when I saw that line, I thought “Fuck, that’s really nice”. It was like a little gift. And it is, in a high romantic way, a beautiful little line.”
