LILI Z. ‘Ma Solitude Et Moi’ – RECORD OF THE DAY

Lili Z. is a French artist who cut her teeth in great bands like The No Talents and The Splash Four, both of those bands flourished in the late 1990’s. She’s currently playing in the excellent band Chrome Reverse. She’s always been one of my favorite guitarists, and she often plays on cool vintage Italian guitars which are my favorite as well (Eko Guitars). She was putting out solo records under her own name for awhile, and although she’s not necessarily making a feminist statement lyrically, these records always felt as important and relevant in that regard as Bikini Kill. Like Kathleen Hanna’s first (solo) Julie Ruin LP, Lili Z. is a solo bedroom recording project. The 10″ this song is from is on her own label Polly Maggoo Records, and the artwork for the record is made up of cartoon renderings of Lili writing, recording, and screaming her head off, making drum machine beats and playing her Eko guitar. She’s controlled the means of production and distribution entirely, and the end result is spectacular. I think this is a magical record. UK garage punk greats Black Time covered this song on their Hate Records 7″ as well.
