Jessie Hill is best known for his hit Ooh Poo Pah Doo, which is a jam, but certainly not his only jam, which is immediately recognizable when you put on Charly R&B’s 1987 compilation of Hill’s scorchers, Y’all Ready Now?
Hill was from New Orleans, and his Louisiana nascence is unmistakeable in his songs, which are upbeat without being frantic. They make you want to grab a cold drink in a go cup and stroll down the street, just seeing and being seen.
Only a teenager when he started making music, Hill packed a full lifetime of rocking and rolling into his relatively short 63 years, performing with greats such as Professor Longhair and Huey Piano Smith in his youth, then winding up writing songs that were made famous by some heavy hitters including Tina Turner and Willie Nelson.
You can’t go wrong listening to Jessie Hill today, especially if you need a little motivation–a little groove to get you going, pick you up and carry you to the weekend.
