In The Tradition Of All That Is Right With Pop….Meet, Chalk and Numbers

chalkandnumbers

Perfect music to start a summer weekend with. I’ve been a fan of this kind of music since the day I first heard Leader Of The Pack, Remember Walking in the Sand, and all the way up to Virtually Happy . I can listen to this for hours on end, love the voice , very cool mix of blending some classic pop with a dash of the new. I can tell you one thing for sure, I’ll be adding ALL of these Albums/EPs’ to my music collection , today! Like I said up top, to me Chalk and Numbers is everything that is right with Pop. Simply beautiful…

Meet The Band

Hi our name is….

Chalk And Numbers

And our sound might be best described as….

A: New Indie Pop inspired by Classic Pop

We are…

Sable and Andrew

Who are some that have an influence on your sound??

A: The Beach Boys and Brian/Dennis/Carl Wilson, The Beatles, Hal Blaine/The Wrecking Crew, Black Sabbath, Misfits/Danzig, Buck Owens/Don Rich, Shuman/Pomus, King/Goffin, Boyce & Hart to name a few

S: Holly GoLightly, Girl groups from the 60s, Siouxsie Sioux, Nancy Sinatra,

The first time we met was…..

A: Somewhere in Greenpoint?

S: Yes, I believe it was at Brooklyn Label!

We knew we were going to be a Band when………

A: I suppose that was the plan when first meeting but actually happened after the first gig offer

S: Indeed. We went from recording project to band after we had to get a band together to play Popfest in 2011.

Our craziest gig ever was….

A: Maybe playing NXNE in Toronto, but it wasn’t really too crazy

S: I really enjoyed playing Brooklyn Bowl with Tennis. Our bassist broke a string, which never happens, and we stilled played our entire set minus one song. Good crowd that night too.

The first song we wrote was…….

A: The first song specifically for Chalk And Numbers was Summer Nights (And Summer Days)

S: I feel like the first song we demoed was ‘I Hope You Do’ but okay

It’s about……

A: Spending a summer with friends before you all eventually part and go separate ways in life.

S: ‘I Hope You Do’ is about when you’re not sure if someone feels the same way that you feel about them. But like, love feelings, not like murder feelings.

What tunes are you currently jamming to…

A: Sunset See My Sadness by The Tokens, Fee-Fi-Fee-Fo-Fum by 1910 Fruitgum Co

S: The Coathangers, The Pixies, Siouxsie Sioux, Hunters, Lorde, The Shivas, The Raveonettes…

What are some of the 1st songs you remember listening to that made you say, that’s what I want to do

A: Not quite sure? Don’t Worry Baby by Beach Boys. Sliver by Nirvana. London Dungeon by The Misfits would be some of them

S: Probably Whitney Houston or Paula Abdul. I grew up with a lot of mainstream pop. But more “being in a band” feels were influenced by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hole, Bikini Kill, lots of female-fronted or all-female bands.

The one thing we want you to remember while you’re listening to us

A: Probably that we record and mix in analog

S: That we don’t suck.
