Philip Priestley’s outstanding Anglo-French 1994 documentary of the Stax story.

The film opens with a visit to the small Memphis suburb where brother and sister Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton first set up a recording studio after Axton second-mortgaged her home to buy the equipment. They soon realized they needed to be closer to the city where the talent was, and after a year moved to an ex-movie theater on East McLemore Avenue in Memphis. The rest, they say, is history.
