Garagepunk fix for the Week…… Meet, The Amputees

amputees

What a cool way to start off the week. Has a nice early 90’s vibe running all through the songs. Different singers bring a variety of attitude to the songs, a little on the punk side at times and then back to the rock ‘n’ roll and then back to punk. Give a listen to The Amputees after you read their answers and I think you’ll agree with me that it’s a cool way to start off your week……

Hi our name is…. The Amputees

People say we sound like…..Nova: Oddly enough most of the comparisons we have gotten are bands I haven’t heard of and don’t remember. We got Husker Du a couple of times.

We are…..Louis Ramos: vocal, guitar/ Nova Luz: vocal, guitar, bass/ Kaleen Reading: drums, guitar/ Carrie Ramos: vocal, tambourine / Gary Young: guitar/ Geena Spigarelli: bass, vocal/ Soledad Alvarado : bass.

We are from…....all over the place…Kaleen is from Jersey…Louis,Gary and Soledad are from the Bronx…Carrie is from Long Island…Geena from Texas and Nova from Harlem but we are based pretty much in Brooklyn as far as band activities.

Who are some that have an influence on you
Nova: some bands we all like are Black Sabbath, Iron maiden, Sleep, Bad Brains, and newer bands we see around like Big Ups, Vulture Shit, Flagland
Louis: From a songwriting point of view : Robert Pollard, Lennon/ McCartney, Jay Reatard

How old were all of you when you started to play and who plays what in the band
Louis: All different ages…but the answer would be tedious

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the sons out

Nova: Louis writes the chords and lyrics to a lot of the songs, and we add our parts to them. Lately, one of us will come with a song or a phrase, we’ll e-mail each other files. And when we get together, we play it. When we go into the studio, we are particular about the sounds and effects and feelings, but we also love accidental things in our songs.

what are some of the challenges you face as musicians and how have you overcome those challenges

Nova: as a group we don’t really have problems aside from scheduling which most bands probably have issues with. i’m sure we all have our own individual challenges. I have terrible anxiety that used to get in the way of my playing on stage, but after I realized how cool I was I started to calm down.

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it ….

Nova: I’d go to the sixties and see Jimi Hendrix play…can I go forward? I’d go forward too

Who are all of you currently listening to ….
Kaleen: Ace Frehley’s first solo album, Die Antwoord
Nova: I’m listening to St Vincent, Pile, The Yin Yangs, Fiasco, Marilyn Manson, Sativa Cult, Person Whale recorded a great ep on an old 4-track and so did Ghost Funk, and Slonk Donkerson keeps surprising me. Also been getting into Latin music lately
Louis: Mannequin Pussy, Die Antwoord, Sunset Guns, Grizzlor, PiL…tons of other shit

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?
Nova: Maybe Electric Wizard, or CHON. Because I like their music and it would make sense after us.
Louis: Die Antwoord cause we can party with them afterwards.

My youngest son is 13 and in a Band, what advice would you offer him…
Louis: Play for joy

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us….

Nova: we’re immortal

Our plans for 2015…..
Louis: We’re putting out a cassette in the summer and a full length by years end on Money Fire Records….hopefully.

listen to some killer tunes…
