Garag-a-Billy from Orlando, Meet – The Woolly Bushmen

WoolyBushmen-800

Now this is some fantastic garage-a-billy to get you to the weekend. There isn’t anything about The Wooly Bushmen , that I don’t like. It’s all about the fun of rock n roll, and they do that quite well. So turn this up and get prepared to have a whole lot of fun….

Hi our name is The Woolly Bushmen

Our sound is..
what we like to call Garage-a-billy

We are: Simon Palombi, Julian Palombi, and Jacob Miller

We are from: Orlando Fl

Who are some that have an influence on you?

The Sonics, Gene Vincent, The Animals, Johnny Horton, The Music Machine, Velvet Underground, and any other two bit garage rock outfit that has ever existed.

How old were all of you when you started to play and who plays what in the band

Simon (organ, guitar, vocals) has been writing and playing since he was 5 years old.

Julian (drums and vocals) has been playing various instruments since he was 5. Particularly the viola. However didn’t start playing drums until he was 17 when The Woolly Bushmen were formed.

Jacob (guitar, bass guitar, vocals) has been playing guitar since he was in his teens, but only started playing the bass in 2011 when the band was formed.

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the songs out

Simon writes the majority of the compositions and lyrics.
“When I come up with an idea that isn’t complete we all work together to get something relatively solid. Sometimes I go ahead and record a demo and have the others learn from that. I almost always come up with the compositions first”

Once all the writing is done we will go ahead and record. We are quite add adamant about recording and producing everything ourselves because we have a particular sound we are trying to go for. Every time we have let someone else record us, the results were quite unsatisfactory. We recorded in a proper studio once and by God we won’t do it again unless the equipment and setting is to our liking. We record everything completely analog to a couple reel to reel tape recorders in our garage. Our latest album “Sky Bosses” was recorded to an old 4 track from the late 60’s. We get the best results this way, so we ain’t changing unless proven otherwise… Which has yet to happen.

Once the recordings our done it is our preference to have it pressed to vinyl, however we do release them digitally and all the web aggregators… That’s pretty much it!

what are some of the challenges you face as musicians and how have you overcome those challenges

Certain challenges may include tour booking which is a pain in the ass. We still just do our best to make as many connections as we can whenever we play out of state. That always helps the booking process.

1st concert you went to and age….
Simon and Julian- Elton John at ages 6 and 3.

Jacob- Green Day at the age of 14

coolest band t-shirt you ever bought…

Simon- a Cynics t-shirt
Julian- they don’t make them in my size

Jacob- Motley Crew

the most insane concert you ever went to or were a part of….

That’s a rough one, probably this show we played with Southern Culture on the Skids an Dex Romweber at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?

If we could open for any band it would probably be the Sonics because though they are quite aged now, the still kick ass just as hard as they did in the 60’s.

My youngest son is 13 and in a Band, what advice would you offer him…

If music is a true passion of his then he can’t ever stop playing. The older you get, music ends up becoming a therapy more than anything. It helps you keep your sanity.

your thoughts on the state of music in 2015.

There is quite a bit of underground music that is outstanding today, however the masses don’t know about it. Mainstream music today is the most upsetting, disappointing, and flat out silly thing that has ever plagued the human race. Insects write better music than what the major labels are marketing. A major change needs to occur.

Our plans for the rest of 2015…..

We plan to tour in the fall as well as keep releasing records. We are gonna keep on doin’ what we do the way we do it!
