From Orlando Fla, and Eye Four Records…….. Meet, Sabals

Heading into the weekend, today we bring you , Sabals from Orlando, Florida. Here are some words of introduction I received from their label, Eye Four Records…
Sabals, an indie rock band from Orlando, Florida, merged onto Eye Four Records in early fall of 2014. The trio consists of Beth Bynum (acoustic guitar, vocals), Dan Bynum (guitar, synth, sampler) and Jessica Vacha (drums).
The trio recorded their EP “Premonitions” at North Avenue Studios, with producer David Plakon (Roadkill Ghost Choir, Off The Avenue, Wild Child, Pompeya). They have had bother singles from the EP make their radio debut on Seattle’s KEXP. Their last single “Blistering” was listed as one of the best local releases of 2014 by The Orlando Weekly.

that being said, all of these tunes have that 90’s vibe going on big time. The vocals lure you in, very nice, big sounds all around, production is top notch. All of these songs have that indie feel running through them, for sure all radio hits, I’m glad they mention The Cranberries as an influence , Beth has that range , just simply beautiful how she hits those notes, cool stuff….

“There’s beauty in their tall, romantic and pop-rich indie rock, but their performance was raw… What’s clear is this is a young band with a sense of show, ambition and vision” – Orlando Weekly

Hi our name is….Sabals

People say we sound like…..Indie rock with electronic elements and powerful female vocals, influenced by sounds of the early 90s.

We are….

Beth Bynum – Vocals, acoustic guitar
Dan Bynum – Electric guitar, synth, electronics
Jessica Vacha – Drums
Tré Hester – Bass

We are from….

Beth grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho, but spent 8 years in Los Angeles before relocating to Orlando in 2013. Dan is from central Florida, but also lived in Los Angeles, where he and Beth met. Jessica and Tré spent the majority of their time living in Central Florida.

Who are some that have an influence on you
(Beth) I’ve been influenced by a lot of different types of music over the years, but when I first got into songwriting, I was listening to a lot of sad folk/alternative music. Early Saddle Creek Records bands were a huge staple, as well as old country music like Johnny Cash and George Jones. Sabals’ sound is heavily influenced by a combination of all that, and early 90s bands like The Pixies, The Cranberries, Radiohead, etc.

How old were all of you when you started to play and who plays what in the band
We’ve all been around music our whole lives, starting very young. Beth first started writing songs at age 14, but has been singing since she could talk.

Beth Bynum – Vocals, acoustic guitar
Dan Bynum – Electric guitar, synth, electronics
Jessica Vacha – Drums
Tré Hester – Bass

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the sons out

(Beth) I’ll have either an idea for lyrics or something I’ve written on the guitar, and sit down and write from either starting point. After the song has a structure, we’ll go in as a band and workshop it. Sometimes that consists of just playing it over and over for a long time until ideas flow naturally.

what are some of the challenges you face as musicians and how have you overcome those challenges

The biggest challenges for me are patience and money. It’s tough to have such a huge dream but have to work in other fields to make ends meet. It’s all worth it, though. Expressing myself through art and creativity is what makes life incredible.

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it ….
1997. Los Angeles, New York, or Seattle.

Who are all of you currently listening to ….
The War on Drugs
The Antlers
The Walkmen
Until the Ribbon Breaks
Angel Olsen
Father John Misty
(To name a few)

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?
Radiohead…because it would be a lifelong dream achieved, and it would be super awesome!

My youngest son is 13 and in a Band, what advice would you offer him…
Follow your heart, make music you love, express yourself and work HARD! Don’t let anyone ever tell you you can’t do something. Stay humble and be authentic.

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us….
You’re super special and we love you.

Our plans for 2015….. A whole lot of writing, recording, playing shows, and touring!
