Let’s make one thing perfectly clear, this is not a new band at least not in the typical sense , so let’s put it out there before we begin. The Split Squad is made up of..Keith Streng (Fleshtones), Eddie Munoz (Plimsouls), Clem Burke (Blondie), Michael Giblin (Parallax Project), Josh Kantor (Baseball Project). Not even one year after starting 50thirdand3rd, here we are talking to Legends, I can’t even begin to tell you how many hours I have spent listening to all of these guys in all of these Bands that I have followed for years, okay decades, but here we are and how cool is that? Their Album, Now Hear This comes out January 21st and a little later on Vinyl. I’ve listened to the album a few times through and I can’t see how anyone who loves rock n roll comes away with anything but smiles. The songs are radio friendly and I hope they get the airplay they deserve. Listening to the different songs and how the beat changes, or a guitar lick or drum solo is added in, I just kept thinking, these guys are pros and this is what an album made by professionals sounds like. It’s like your hearing all the experiences of the band roll into one cohesive unit and I guess that’s the definition of a band. I hope your getting the idea that I think this Album should be rated as high as your allowed to rate an album. Oh and they cover The Small Faces , buy the album, follow The Split Squad, tell your friends about them go to their website and sign up as a fan.The Split Squad That’s enough from me, so let’s Meet….
Hi our name is….The Split Squad
And our sound might be best described as….a trip through our record collections. A little punk, a little soul, a little glam, a lot of attitude! We all have such diverse tastes, and we are all accomplished in so many different areas, that it’s easy to include a lot of it in what we are doing.
We are….. Michael Giblin (bass/vocals), Keith Streng (guitar/vocals), Eddie Munoz (guitar), Clem Burke (drums), Josh Kantor (keyboards)
We are originally from…..All over the place! Michael is from PA, Eddie from LA, Keith from Brooklyn, Clem from LA, and Josh is from Boston.
The first time we met was…..I don’t think we could pin that down precisely. We have all known each other for years, having crossed paths on various tours and projects. Michael and Eddie did some albums together in the 90’s, then Eddie ended up playing with Michael in his band Parallax Project. Eddie worked with Clem in the 90’s version of The Plimsouls, and then again in Magic Christian (with The Flamin’ Groovies Cyril Jordan). All three bands did shows with The Fleshtones, but Keith, Clem, and Eddie go way back to the 80’s as friends. Josh plays in The Baseball Project, which did shows with Parallax Project. Through the Baseball Project connection, we got Scott McCaughey to produce the album, who tapped Peter Buck to play on a song. A real “six degrees of separation” thing. It was all very organic and “matter of fact”.
We knew we were going to be a Band when………We hit the bottom of the 3rd bottle of wine! It started with Michael and Keith, when Keith suggested they make a record together. Eddie came on board, and Clem followed. We brought Josh in to add keyboards to the album, and he stuck around!
Before starting the band we were employed as…….Guys in other bands! We all have active careers in other bands, but Josh gets the award for the most interesting extra-curricular activity. His day job is as the organist at Fenway Park for The Boston Red Sox! No kidding!
The first song we wrote was…….Our first collaborative effort was “Touch & Go”, a co-write between Michael and Keith. Keith wrote most all of the music, and Michael did the lyrics and melody.
It’s about……A saucy girl who makes her living in a very dubious manner….
What we are currently listening to….On the road, it’s a lot of Beatles, Small Faces, and old soul records. Eddie seems to have a mainline into some amazing obscure soul and R&B, and he’s the consummate tour vehicle DJ.
For fun we like to…..Keep playing music!! There isn’t a day in the year when at least one of us isn’t out gigging!
The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us……Rock & Roll needs to be FUN. We had a lot of fun making this record, and we have a lot of fun playing together. Friends making a big righteous racket is what rock & roll is all about, and that’s what we are after.
Expect…..We are releasing our album “Now Hear This…” on January 21st. Touring for us is whenever we can coordinate schedules, because Blondie & The Fleshtones are still both very busy. So we are hoping for a couple of short trips throughout the year in the US, and one in Europe in the spring. We like to play together with The Fleshtones (who graciously let Keith pull double duty), and that is one seriously fun night of rock & roll!!
