Dynamic Blues/Rock Duo from Ft Lauderdale ……Meet, Killmama

image

Let’s start by saying , add Killmama to a short list of bands that are going to make you pay attention in 2015. What a blues pack of dynamite these 2 are. Sounds like there’s at least 4 making all this glorious noise but it’s only 2. Crazy good if you like rock with a whole lot of blues and if you don’t like that combination you’re in the wrong place my friend. I can’t wait for the whole album to come out, I need more. When the album is ready look for it to be named the “Album of The Week” right here at 50thirdand3rd. AWESOME STUFF!!!

Hi our name is….

Killmama

People say we sound like…..

Music you wanna listen to for a introspective night drive…?…

We are….

Sophie Sputnik and Rob Kingsley (also known as “Mustard”)

We are from…….

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Who are some that have an influence on you

Erykah Badu, King tuff, Nirvana, Jack White, Fiona apple.

How old were all of you when you started to play and who plays what in the band

Robbie has been playing guitar since he was a lil’ robbie. He plays guitar in the band, and also records and mixes everything. I have been singing the blues since I was 3 years old. I play the drums, and sing in the band. I’ve been playing the drums for about three years now.

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the songs out

It always depends where the inspiration comes from. My personal favorite is when robbie comes up with a hook on the guitar and I’ll write lyrics, melody, and rhythm around it. After we get a good idea of what the song is like, we will keep playing it over and over-breaking it a part and creating a lineage. Sometimes robbie will give me drum ideas and sometimes I’ll give him guitar ideas. It’s a very intense process because we don’t have much education when it comes to music theory-so to try and explain what we hear to each other is insane haha. If you ever over hear us writing you would probably hear me go “No play it like this: bad dum dum barrr narrrr” and he’ll be like “oh like, baarrrrr narrrr bum dum barrr” and then i’ll be like “NO!!”

so yah kids…go to school. 😉

what are some of the challenges you face as musicians and how have you overcome those challenges

A favorite artist of mine Leah from a great band “Slothrust” out of Brooklyn, once gave me some advice and it pretty much sums up everything. “Don’t get discouraged.”
That’s probably the hardest part. Touring, recording, writing, live shows, music videos, PR, merch etc. The list goes on, its a lot of work-and sometimes it feels like you’re doing it all for nothing. Sometimes I’ll get caught up in my ego and think I deserve some sort of recognition, but thats just so wrong. For me, I’ve learned how important it is to stay present and enjoy every second of it. That’s the pay off. Enjoying your work is the pay off-seeing other people enjoy your work is a luxury and I’m incredibly grateful for it when it does happen.

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it ….

For me I’d have to say either the early 90s or early 70s. I’d go to Seattle in the 90s of course, and I’d go to greenwich in the 60s. Robbies not here with me right now but I’m sure he’d say the same. hehe.

Who are all of you currently listening to ….

Robbie is all over King Tuff’s newest album. “Black moon spell”

I’ve been all over the map lately, but in the last few days I’ve really been into Mary Lamberts album “Welcome to the age of my body” She’s rad.

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?

Me and Robbie would so love to open for the Alabama shakes. We love them SO MUCH. And honestly i think it would just be a great show. Not to mention touring around with them seems like it would be a really easy good time.

My youngest son is 13 and in a Band, what advice would you offer him…

I think I’d quote leah like I did before. Don’t get discouraged man. Keep writing, playing, listening, and be true to you. Play whatever feels right, and explore yourself and the world with music as much as possible.

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us….

Astro is the cutest dog in the world, no dog is cuter. Do not
