Bob Forrest & Friends – Live 2016 | Album Review

It’s sad to think about all the gifted musicians we’ve lost to drug abuse. We’ve lost everyone from singular pieces of the puzzle all the way up to seemingly immortal legends. Somewhere in between those pieces and legends stands Bob Forrest. At the age of 56, Forrest has seen more ups and downs than some of those legends lived to tell about. More importantly, he has lived to tell about it. He does just that on Bob Forrest & Friends – Live 2016.

The highs and lows of the rock n’ roll lifestyle rarely have a happy ending.

As the front man and lyricist of Thelonious Monster and The Bicycle Theif, Forrest was an integral part of the underground music since of the late 80s. He has shared the stage with acts such as Fishbone, Jane’s Addiction, and Guns ‘N Roses. He is close friends with the members of The Red Hot Chili Peppers both on and off stage. In fact, some of the darker times in his life were spent on drug binges with Flea and Anthony Kiedis.

Fortunately for Forrest, those dark times didn’t mean the final days of his life. Not only did he clean his life up but he also went on to help his close friends to do the same. As a drug counselor and co-founder of Hollywood Recovery Services, Forrest has dedicated much of his later life in helping others battle addiction and stay clean. Even appearing on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab and Sober House with Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Forrest is just as passionate as a performer as he is an advocate.

On Bob Forrest & Friends – Live 2016, Forrest reunites with some of his friends from various projects for an evening of song, storytelling, and hope. Zander Schloss, Mike Martt, Josh Blum, and Josh Klinghoffer, all back Forrest through songs spanning his entire career. It’s set in an intimate setting where Forrest can be comfortable enough to talk candidly about the creation of each song. Sometimes during a song! The story during “Sammy Hagar Weekend” is hilarious and endearing, summing up just what a kindhearted individual Forrest is.

Bob Forrest Vinyl

Bob Forrest & friends splatter

This live album is presented on vinyl through Greenway Records on an extremely limited pressing of just 200 copies. With such a small production number, it’s obvious this album will be an instant collector’s item. However, it’s truly a delight to hear. The sound is warm and comforting as if you’re sitting right next to the band as they play through the songs. Guitars are full and bass rich, parallel with Forrest’s front and center vocals.

I’m generally not a fan of live recordings, but this album doesn’t feel like a record, but an intimate gathering of friends and loved ones telling the stories that shaped their lives. Bob Forrest’s prolific life is a gift and Greenway Records has presented that gift in the most satisfying way. After my first listen I not only felt deeply moved but also empowered. Something not many live albums have achieved.

Bob Forrest is truly an inspiration and this album captures the very essence of artistry, passion, and hope.
