AFGHAN WHIGS ! Spotted in Belgium… High Voltage !

AFGHAN WHIGS – Cirque Royal, Brussels – February 7th, 2015.

Intensity and electricity. Passionate soul and monumental rock. Volume knob to the far right. This must be Afghan Whigs. Without a doubt one of the best bands of the nineties. Last year they came back with their first album in 16 years, ‘Do To The Beast‘. A blast ! One of their best achievements ever. Fierce and dark. A magnum opus. I spotted them last Saturday in Brussels. Their intentions were immediately crystal clear. They came to… ROCK ! A violin intro launched Parked Outside, the first bomb followed by irresistible groovy bastard Matamoros. Two sledgehammers from the Beast LP.

Let’s rock…

The scope of Greg Dulli‘s voice is just H-U-G-E ! It’s the Whigs’ most powerful instrument. Inexhaustible energy. And after all these years Dulli knows all the tricks and the moves to heat the audience. They use snippets of some classic tracks as intros to their own songs: House Of The Rising Sun (The Animals), Morning Theft (Jeff Buckley) and Roadhouse Blues (The Doors). A golden formula that generates lots of ‘ohs’ and ‘ahs’. 24 Karat entertainment. Tremendous !

Phenomenal voice…

Next killer is Debonair. One hell of an euphoric highlight. The whole venue goes berserk. Gentlemen is the following full frontal attack and causes that awesome ‘live in concert’ orgasm. Time for some slow ones. It Kills and Can Rova, with Dulli at the piano, are no less than towering pieces of stunning songwriting. Electrifying renditions too. Every little thing he does is magic (yes, they covered The Police hit while Dulli wandered throughout the crowd.) Meanwhile Ryan O’Hara, their almost legendary monitor engineer, is going bonkers behind his panel and… then suddenly, near the end of the set, he appears on stage playing guitar like a rock star. Hilarious moment. It’s showtime. Splendid !

The O’Hara show…

After another salvo of knockouts the band left the stage. The public’s reaction was deafening. The Whigs came back to finish business with five encores. They are pure rock and soul devils. Brutal force and deeply rooted vehemence. Their setlist (including 8 out of 10 tracks of the new album !) is concrete. High Voltage. They are then and now. Respect ! Stay this time.

The beast…

Grand finale..
