I’m going to keep this short. The Moonlandingz are a fictional studio project imagined by Adrian & Dean from the ‘Eccentronic Research Council’ with Lias Fat White Family & Saul (Insecure Men). Now Real. And these are some of the coolest answers I have ever received .
The 50thirdand3rd Interview With – The Moonlandingz
(Answers from Adrian Flanagan)
1) For those unfamiliar with your music, can you can you give us a little of your back history?
Adrian Flanagan(Moonlandingz organ wielding founder & co songwriter: “We (The Moonlandingz) sprung forth in to the scorching searchlight of show business pretty much by accident..I wrote a spoken word concept record for my other group the ‘Eccentronic Research Council’ with my musical partner, Dean Honer, about a woman stalking the lead singer of a fictional band, whom I called The Moonlandingz..The album at that point was like a weird radio play soundtracked by the radiophonic workshop. It was at that point I thought it may be interesting to write some actual proper songs for said fictional band, to lend the spoken word album a little more weight. So Dean & I wrote 2 or 3 poppy instrumental tracks and I approached Lias & Saul from the Fat White Family to sing on it and add some extra guitar…the first track we recorded was called Sweet Saturn Mine, which we thought might be funny to send out to the BBC radio. To our surprise the track got playlisted and spent a couple of months on the radio in the UK. Subsequently we were asked to do a radio session for the BBC (we only had four songs), which we did for a DJ called Marc Riley..From then on we were getting emails from all over the world to play live shows, but still only had 4 songs…so that summer, Lias, Dean and I sat in a dark room and didn’t come out till we had written a bunch of new songs , of which became the tracks on our debut album, or should I say…our forthcoming debut greatest hits LP ?! (Laughs)..the world is very lucky!”
2) Who would you list as your musical influence?
AF: ” The Banana Splits, Elton John, Broadcast and The Carpenters.”
3) What’s the coolest thing that’s happened to you since you started up?
AF: “Only hot stuff happens to me.. However, having Yoko Ono sing on the closing track on our debut is about as cool as it gets.”
4) What are your hopes and dreams as a musician for the next few years?
AF: “To not die, to not hate the people I make music with, to own a house in Notting Hill.”
5) What are some of your favorite albums from the past few years?
AF: “I’m not that bothered by modern music so much, but recently I’ve liked…
‘Morgan Delt – Phase Zero’
‘Kool Keith – Feature Magnetic’
‘Whyte Horses – Pop or Not’
‘Thundercat – Drunk’.
‘Children of Alice – Children of Alice’
6) Do you see any real use for social media, or is it all just a pain in the ass to keep up with?
AF: “It’s great for spreading fake news. It’s great for giving sociopathic introverts a voice. It’s great for giving stalkers a way of tracking your steps. It’s great for stealing people’s music and potential livelihoods. It’s great how it’s killed the music industry and the film industry, and has led to all the libraries closing down and has killed the art of conversation…Even a romantic night out on the town usually leads to the glow of candlelight being replaced by the glow of a cell phone screen, lighting up your babies eyes…Yeah, I’m absolutely all for it!!(laughs).”
7) Do you pay attention to reviews or comments from people about your music or do you just turn that noise off?
AF: “It really doesn’t bother me so much. All I’m bothered about is making a great record and having a great live group to take scalps across the globe…What I hate are these lone sniper types, aged, bitter, humourless journalists who think they are some kind of Lester Bangs character who go “yeah, it’s a masterclass in songwriting, but I’ve heard it all before(because they were born at the beginning of time) ….however, their press release comes across as smug so, I’m going to mark it down to something less honourable”…that gets right on my tits..not only are they totally missing the humour and tone within how we are selling our art,(we are totally taking the piss out of the cliched rock star) , but their pettiness screams ‘Desperate little-penised troll’… We are under no illusions that what we do is hardly inventing the wheel, but we totally went out of our way to make a great, fun, sonically engaging and thought provoking record – and on the whole, that is exactly how it’s being received by the public, the national press and the radio, right across the age groups. Plus, since when has a little bit of self belief been a crime? Fuck it, we are the fucking best, everyone else can get to fuck!!”(laughs).
8) If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?
AF: “A three week tour inside the mind of Donald Trump!! (Laughs).”
Can music save the mortal soul, or is just a good backbeat to your life?
AF: “Ever since I was a child, music has been my best friend, it’s been my comfort, it’s never left my side. It’s taken me to incredible places and I’ve met some incredible people through making it and when you’ve got hundreds of people losing their shit in front of you, there’s no better feeling…it’s a shared experience that transcends mere words..Music is the most tangible of all religions, I’ve seen it, I’ve felt it, I’ve touched it, I fucking make it!!”
Any last thoughts for your fans?
“Take care of each other and check in on your aged neighbour…then beat yourself off within an inch of your life!” (Laughs).
