Vinyl, HBO’s new hit series, launched this season with not only an amazing cast and storyline, but also an incredible soundtrack. That seems like a given, as the show revolves around the music industry in the 1970s. What is surprising, however, is that the show features new artists covering classics. This week, Julian Casablancas covered The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs.” Casablancas has awoken the spirit of Lou Reed in this haunting remake, and added a layer of production that gives an intense weight to the song. Casablancas’s is no rookie when it comes to covering the Velvet Underground, though. A few months ago he covered “Run Run Run,” another Casablancas masterpiece.
